Did you know ...
...that the Maori have a very special greetings ritual?
In New Zealand, like as in Australia, people like to great each other with a “G’day”. You will also certainly be greeted by a Maori since they still make up 14% of New Zealand’s population, with a heartfelt hug and the traditional Hongi-hello.
Here they touch their noses, not rub (!), while at the same time they lower their eyes and look at each other twice. At this time they give a loud deep Mmm-mmm. The word Hongi means “to smell”. The appropriate Maori greeting Kia Ora (“Hello, I would like you to stay in good health”) is common through all parts of society. One answers to the greeting with the same response.
Did you know that you can find the steepest street in the world in New Zealand? About 30 km north of Dunedin is Baldwin Street. The 35% grade steepness earned the street an entrance in the Guinness Book of World Records.
